Georgia inherited money: compare direct filing with documented recovery assistance

Compare Georgia's free official claim route with current registered-representative forms and documented assistance questions.

Georgia families can compare paid recovery assistance against a concrete baseline: the Department of Revenue’s own free search and claim process. The useful comparison is not “help or no help,” but which tasks remain difficult, what authority the family has, and what a written agreement actually covers. A representative cannot turn an uncertain inheritance into an approved claim by promising convenience.

Price the direct-filing alternative first

The DOR search instructions say it is completely free to search and claim. They allow claims as an heir or executor, require registration to submit, and call for a printed estate claim form that may need additional documentation. List the specific task you cannot yet complete before evaluating a paid proposal.

For example, the obstacle might be organizing owner records, understanding a request, or resolving who can act. Those are different needs. Ask whether the provider will perform the named task, refer it elsewhere, or simply submit documents supplied by the family.

Use current Georgia representative materials

DOR’s Claimant Designated Representative page says locators providing these services in Georgia must register. Its current representative FAQ explains the standard-agreement requirements. Verify the proposed provider’s actual Georgia status; the existence of the program proves nothing about a particular company.

The UP-CDR2 recovery agreement and instructions directs self-filers back to the official claim route. Its fee-and-cost language uses a thirty-percent maximum measured against the claimed amount or property value, whichever is lower. The maximum does not apply when a judicial order, judgment or decree to establish entitlement is required. Read the current agreement and exception carefully; a maximum is not every provider’s fee.

Compare a company’s stated workflow with direct filing

Claimio.com’s Individuals page describes document-gathering help, authorization, filing and claim tracking. Its Methodology page describes recurring searches and documentation coordination, while acknowledging direct state filing at no cost. These are company descriptions, not a finding that the service fits this estate. Compare the actual written tasks with DOR’s free route, and separately confirm any proposed representative’s Georgia registration and signer authority under the official rules above.

Read the proposed agreement as an estate document

Ask for the fee percentage, included costs, calculation basis and expected net amount in writing. Review the current form’s treatment of additional terms and ask which other document, if any, is part of the proposal. DOR distinguishes recovery agreements from purchases of property; ask which arrangement you are being offered rather than treating the labels as equivalent.

Separately identify who has authority to enter the agreement for the claim. Being the relative who found the record does not establish authority over the estate or another heir’s interest. Resolve uncertainty about signer capacity before presenting a service contract as the family’s authorization. For an estate claim using the linked UP-CDR2 representative agreement, its checklist calls for the decedent’s death certificate and probate documents, and warns that documentation varies by claim. Ask which probate records establish the actual role; this representative-agreement checklist is not a universal self-filing packet.

Compare responsibilities, not promised outcomes

A practical comparison sheet can name the property references, the work included, the family’s remaining tasks, who answers state requests and how the agreement ends. Ask how missing owner-address evidence, additional deceased heirs or disputed interests would be handled. These are recommended due-diligence questions, not extra Georgia filing requirements.

Keep service selection separate from DOR’s decision. A possible match is not entitlement, representative registration is not estate authority, and a submitted packet is not approval or payment. Choose only after both the official alternative and the documented scope are clear.
